Plan and develop pre-production materials (U3: P3, M2)
Learning Outcome 2 (U3): Be able to plan and develop pre-production materials for an original media product to a client brief
Gantt Chart
This is my gantt chart which is needed to show the planned timings of all the tasks needed to complete. It is a visual representation for the client to understand how long it will take, and for myself to ensure I do not go over the deadlines. I have split the tasks into 5 different milestones which is shown by the different colours. I have written contingency to allow extra time to write the body copy as it may take longer than planned. I'm aiming to finish the project on the week of the 18th of January.
The use of adding in a mood board to the proposal is so that the client is able to understand the visual aesthetic of the magazine and the style of photography. This is my moodboard which I have created to inspire my magazine. It is made up of images of singers. This will inspire my magazine as the colours and image styles reflect the pop and hip-hop genre and appeal to the target audience. It also makes them look like an 'icon'.
This is my location recces. It is essential to ensure all locations are suitable for photographing the model. It explains the locations in which I would like to take primary photos of the artist/model. I have explained how suitable each will be and a photograph of the location.
Risk Assessment
This is my risk assessment which goes through different hazards that can occur during the production of this magazine, their level of how likely the risk is to occur and how it can be solved. This is essential to the preparation of the production as, by identifying the risks, we can overcome them or avoid them.
Model release form
This is my Model release form. It is essential as it demonstrates that the model is completely aware of all the legal aspects to the production. It is signed by the model that will be in the magazine, where they agree that us as a magazine have permission to use the photos of them how we like. As they are under 18, their parent/guardian have signed it as well.
Location release form
This is a location release form that the owner needs to sign which gives permission to take photos in their private property. As I am taking photos in public locations, this is not needed at the moment. However, if I later decide to take photos in a private property, this is what I will need to fill out.
Layout: Hand drawn sketches
The use of the hand-drawn sketches are extremely important as it allows the client to understand the structure and layout of the magazine to ensure it fits industry conventions, appeals to the target audience and fits the genre.
The use of the hand-drawn sketches are extremely important as not only does it allows the client to understand the structure and layout of the magazine to ensure it fits industry conventions, appeals to the target audience and fits the genre. It also demonstrates digital editing skills which showcase talent to the client. Furthermore, it helps the editor work out if their are any issues that were present in the hand-drawn sketch that are not attainable digitally.
The fonts are shown to illustrate the fact that the correct fonts are used to entice the target audience and genre. These are the fonts for my magazine. The masthead will be in the first font. The sans serif style font reflects the modern genres and give the magazine a classy look. The second two fonts will be used for my headlines and cover lines. These appeal to the young target audience. For the body copy, it will be in the font Arial.
Colour scheme
The use of the adding a colour scheme into the proposal is so the client can understand how the colour's will look in the magazine. My colour scheme will change each issue to reflect the featured artist. This will be the colour scheme for the first issue as it reflect the artist that will be featured. The blue and pink compliment each other as they are complimentary colours. It also connotes how this magazine appeals to both genders.
Legal issues
One legal issue that I may face in this magazine is copyright. Copyright is 'the exclusive and assignable legal right, given tot he originator for a fixed number of years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literacy, artistic, or musical material'. This is important not to break as if you do, you can get fined up to £50,000 and jailed up to 6 months. This may apply to my magazine as I am including the artists top 10 songs. To overcome this issue, I will need to get permission from the singers whose songs are featured to use their songs in the magazine.
Another legal issue that I may face in this magazine is the libel aspect of the defamation act. Libel is 'a method of defamation expressed by print, writing, pictures, signs, effigies, or any communication embodied in physical form that is injurious to a person's reputation, exposes a person to public hatred'. This is important not to break as if you do, it can be taken to court as well as loosing your positive reputation. This may apply to my magazine as the artist is being interviewed in an unstructured and the artist has the freedom to say what they like. The way this can be resolved is by ensuring the interviewer asks questions that do not involve bringing other people down. If there is some form of slander, the editor can cut it out.
Another legal issue I may face is the intellectual property law. The intellectual property law 'relates to the establishment and protection of intellectual creations such as inventions, designs, brands, artwork and music'. This is important not to break as you can be fined and loose your positive reputation. This may apply to my magazine as it means no one can copy my ideas and work, for example, using the same font and name. If someone does copy or steal my work, I am protected by the Intellectual property act.
Ethical issues
One ethical issue that could occur is racism. This will not occur in my magazine. One way we promote diversity and inclusivity in the magazine is by ensuring that there is a range of races and ethnicities within the artists that are featured. Furthermore, within the articles, modern day issues will be discussed and the artists opinions on them. These issues will include racism which spreads awareness on it and how it can be overcome, influencing the target audience to stand up to racism and do their best to demolish it.
Another ethical issue that could occur is not properly looking after the staffs wellbeing. For example, working too many hours and not getting enough nutrition. This will be avoided in the making of the magazine. For example, one way this can be avoided is by making sure staffs have breaks throughout the day. Also, there will be food and drinks available to ensure they have energy and have proper nutrition. There will also be the option to work from home if they are ill and not fit to come into an office.
Another ethical issue that may occur is the content not being appropriate for the age demographic. This could range from it being to young or too old for the target audience. For example, featuring an artist whose target audience is 7-10 means their content will not interest our target audience of 15-19 year olds, which could lead to readers not wanting to purchase the magazine. To overcome this, the featured artist's target audience will be checked to ensure it fits in with our magazines target audience. This can be checked by social media, by looking at their analytics.
