Learning Outcome 1(U3): Be able to create a proposal with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief
Learning Outcome 2(U21): Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based of a given brief
Purpose
One purpose of the magazine is to entertain. For example, readers can experience escapism; if people are going through a hard time in their real life, such as illness or bullying, they can get distracted from their real life problems by reading the magazine. Additionally, it provides a time filler and a catalyst for relaxation. Another purpose of the magazine is to promote unknown artists from North London. This is by having interviews, the USP that the featured artist in the magazine does a live performance in a North London venue and how readers can view their music profile by scanning the QR code. This acts as a synergy because the magazine could not have the USP of the live shows without the venues, and the venues could not have the amount of interest by the target audience without the magazine promoting them. This will also strengthens the local community. The main purpose of this magazine is to generate a large revenue, be successful and sold across London.
Form
There will be around 150 pages. The cover will be printed glossy so it allures potential buyers and the inside will be printed matte so light does not reflect onto the pages, making it easy to read. The composition will split up the different sections of the magazine. For example, the adverts will be in the first few pages, then interviews and other content. The adverts will appeal to the target audience as they will relate to the genre (such as headphones, music speakers). They will also appeal to the young target audience by advertising items such as cheap and trendy clothes, upcoming TV shows or movies and new music.
There will be the website at the bottom of every alternate page where readers will find more exclusive content and information and the option to purchase a subscription. There will be social media pages such as Instagram and Twitter. This is so the young target audience of 15-25 year olds who are most likely to actively engage with social media. The Instagram page will post pictures of the featured artists when the magazine is released. Not only does this act as an advertisement to the magazine as Instagram users will see the magazine and possibly be interested in purchasing, but it also promotes the artists because followers of the magazine account can see pictures of them and start becoming fans by engaging in their page. The twitter account will be used to advertise the magazine by tweeting links to purchasing either the subscription or individual copies and pictures of the front cover. The main purpose of the Twitter page will be to engage with fans of the magazine. This is because readers can tweet questions, ask for advice or suggest new content for the magazine.
Genre
The genre of this magazine will be hip-hop and pop. I have decided to combine these genres because I have found that pop music is starting to move more towards rap and hip-hop. They are very popular genres in North London that fit the brief: showing people the 'vibrant music scene developing'. Furthermore, the genres appeal to the semi young target audience and allow for a creative design.
Content
This magazine will include a wide range of content. There will be an article about the featured artist. This article will include interviews with them so readers can find out about the artist. Also, information about the live show that the featured artist will perform at will be included. Readers can read the interview to learn about their music and style and decide if they would like to attend their concert. Additionally, the QR code that takes you to the artists music will promote the artist as well as promoting their live shows, acting as a cross promotion. There will be a Q&A section with the artist, with questions that fans have tweeted for us to ask. This engages readers with the magazine. There will be a section of the artists top 10 music pics so readers can learn more about the artists and the genre.
Target audience
The primary target audience for this magazine will be all genders. This reflects how North London is overall quite accepting of everyones identity and very diverse. Additionally, the artists featured will be all genders as their music appeals to all. The target audience will be all races and ethnicities. I will feature artists of all races and ethnicities so readers will feel represented and have someone to look up to who they can relate to. This contrasts to how often in media, people from ethnic minorities, such as black people are viewed negatively. Readers will see the featured artists from ethnic minorities, and see how they can be successful which can inspire them to work hard and not listen to the stereotypes that society places on them. This also reflects the diversity and multi-cultural demographic of North London. The target audience's class will be B (middle class) as north London has a range of social classes. This will be reflected in the price for individual monthly magazines will be £3.99, however the yearly subscription fee will be £45. The target audiences age will be 15-25 because this is the age that is most likely to keep up with new artists and be loyal fans of known celebrities. Also, this age demographic is most likely to be fans of the pop or hip-hop genre.
The secondary target audience will be siblings or family members of the primary target audience. This is because the pop and hip-hop genre's might appeal to them as well. Also, they look up to their older family members and want to be like them meaning they will read the same magazine. They may also be inclined to then go see the featured artists in their live shows, bringing in more revenue.
The tertiary target audience will be people who are fans of music and would like to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the pop and hip-hop genre.
Resources and Personnel
A computer will be needed with photoshop on. Photoshop will be needed so that the magazine can be edited in ways such as adding text, changing tones and colours, adding photos and adding graphic designs. A digital camera will be needed to take photos of the artists. Artists will be needed to take photos of and feature in the magazine in ways such as images, interviews and link to their music. A photographer will be needed to take primary photos.
Distribution and Marketing methods
The main form of marketing will be on social media. This is because the target audience's age 15-25 are heavily involved in social media. In 2018, it was found that 70% of teenagers go on social media more than once a day. This demonstrates how influenced the age demographic can be easily influenced by social media and as a magazine, we can use this to our advantage by engaging on this platform. There will be an Instagram page that posts images of the artists featured. There will also be a twitter page where readers can interact with the magazine. This means teenagers may see the social media for the magazine and decide to purchase if they are interested. The main form of marketing on social media will be by doing sponsored posts with online influencers who appeal to the same target audience. For example, an Instagram blogger who has the same target audience as the magazine can take a photo with the magazine and since their fans look up to them and idolise them, they may purchase the magazine to be like them. This also spreads awareness of the magazine.
Another form of marketing will be posters of the magazine outside shops. This magazine will be distributed in local shops and supermarket chains in North London. This means people walking past can see the front cover and decide to purchase. It will be in areas such as near public transport. This is because the age demographic are likely to get public transport as they are young and may be attracted to the design on the front cover. Additionally, parents of the target audience who get public transport will see poster and decide to get it for their children.
Readers have the option to subscribe on the magazine's website. This means they can either pay a yearly fee of £45 (and get 12 copies) or for six months with a fee of £24 (to get six copies). Subscribers will automatically get the magazine sent to their chosen address, as well as getting access to exclusive information on the website and early access to book concert tickets by the featured artist. However, if readers do not subscribe, they can purchase the magazine individually for £3.99 per issue.
Font styles
The fonts are shown to illustrate the fact that the correct fonts are used to entice the target audience and genre.
1) Coverlines
These are the fonts for the cover lines. They reflect the pop and hip-hop genre's because it's bold and connotes confidence. It attracts the target audience of 15-25 as it is fun and bubbly, yet not too young-looking. It also contrasts to the sleek and simple masthead font. I've also decided to include two different styles of the same font so the featured article and other more important information is separated from the less relevant information. Inside the magazine, the titles for the articles will be in the same font. These fonts will also be used inside the magazine for the headlines to make it cohesive and contrast to the body copy.
2) Masthead
This is the font for my masthead. The simplicity and thin lines give the font a contemporary look, reflecting the pop and hip-hop genre. Additionally, it is easy to read and aesthetically pleasing, yet it does not take attention away from the main image of the featured artist.
I decided to call the magazine 'Icon' because it is an artist based magazine that can turn a regular, unknown person into an icon. Furthermore, it can inspire readers to pursue their talents and aspirations by showing anyone who works hard to achieve their goals can become an icon.
3) Body copy
The body copy will be in the font 'Arial' in roughly size 10 to fit the industry conventions.
Magazines in competition
Some of the magazine that are in competition are NME and We Love Pop. NME is £5.59 and We Love Pop is £3.99. NME is an artist based magazine which is now exclusively online. It is not purely for the pop and hip-hop genre however some artists featured are in that genre (such as Britney Spears). NME's target audience is 13-19. We love pop is a pop based magazine however, it doesn't have one main featured artist. Furthermore, the target audience is 13-15. My magazine is a lot cheaper than NME and the same price as We love pop, but the price is much more justified because of the exclusive USP where each artist featured does a live performance. My magazine also promotes unknown, talented artists which both NME and We love pop does not do.
Mood board
The use of adding in a mood board to the proposal is so that the client is able to understand the visual aesthetic of the magazine and the style of photography. My mood board is made up of images of artists, either performing or posing. These images and colour style will inspire the magazine. This is because the poses show off the artists an make them look like an 'Icon'.
Colour scheme
The use of the adding a colour scheme into the proposal is so the client can understand how the colour's will look in the magazine . My colour scheme for each issue will change to reflect the artist. For example, for a pop singer who is very bubbly and feminine, the front cover may have a pink colour scheme. However, the masthead will always be in black to maintain a brand identity and it's a neutral colour that goes with well with other colours.
Layout ideas
The use of the hand-drawn sketches are extremely important as it allows the client to understand the structure and layout of the magazine to ensure it fits industry conventions, appeals to the target audience and fits the genre.
